How to request during core hours
Core hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
First, phone the H&I Filton laboratory, 0117 912 5728, and discuss your request.
Place orders for HPA-1a and 5b negative components on OBOS using the specialist stock tab and follow up with a confirmation telephone call. Please indicate HPA requirements in the notes box.
Order in advance for planned procedures
To ensure the best matched component is provided for patients, order at least 24 hours (reference page 18 in the Component Portfolio) in advance of the required delivery time, Monday to Friday.
Providing 24 hours notice means we can:
- Select the best available HPA selected platelet and red cells from stock held anywhere in the country
- Transport the component to hospitals on routine deliveries, keeping cost to a minimum
- Insufficient notice may result in a less well-matched unit for the patient, because it is from local stock, and may incur an ad-hoc delivery charge
Providing less than 24 hours notice means we may not:
- Be able to fulfil urgent orders for components for patients with HPA antibody specificities other than HPA-1a and HPA-5b and for those with red cell antibodies.
How to make emergency requests outside of core hours
Telephone your Hospital Services department to refer the case to the on-call NHSBT medic and get approval for the order.

How to request when OBOS is not available
Telephone H&I Filton (0117 912 5728) to request an order form (FRM609). After returning the form, follow up with a confirmation telephone call, during core hours.
