NHSBT provides a wide range of specialist diagnostic services. Our laboratories are regularly inspected and audited by the internal quality team and where appropriate are accredited and regulated by the relevant external agencies such as CPA, EFI, JACIE and MHRA.
Red Cell Immunohaematology
The Red Cell Immunohaematology laboratories provide reference investigations and antenatal screening services. The laboratories also investigate adverse transfusion reactions.
We provide a range of reagents for use in red cell serology grouping, screening and investigations.
Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics
The H&I laboratories provide services related to solid organ and stem cell transplantation, platelet immunology, the provision of HLA/HPA selected products, transfusion reactions, the investigation of HLA related disease associations and granulocyte immunology.
The National Transfusion Microbiology Laboratory provides reference, monitoring and epidemiological services to support other services within the NHSBT, including the investigation of suspected adverse transfusion reactions.
Specialist Services electronic reporting system using Sunquest ICE (Sp-ICE)
Sp-ICE delivers results within 1 hour of authorisation.
Haemopoietic Stem Cell services
The SCI laboratories provide services to support haemopoietic stem cell transplantation including collection, processing and cryopreservation of stem cells and cord blood cells.

In addition to running blood donation and banking services NHSBT operates a tissue donation and banking programme. Tissue Services staff work closely with families, hospitals, health professionals and other services to raise awareness of tissue donation and maintain the highest standards in this life-saving field.
- The International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL)
IBGRL and the Bristol Institute for Transfusion Science provide a reference and research service in the field of Transfusion Medicine.
