Training-Education

The role of the Scientific & Technical Training Function (STT) is to provide knowledge based training courses in transfusion science and transfusion medicine. Courses cover all levels from very basic through to advanced topics and are open to medical and scientific staff and healthcare workers. We can occasionally offer places on courses, or work placements, to overseas visitors.

Training is provided in basic science (molecular biology, immunology, genetics, statistics and epidemiology) as well as in specialties, red cell immunohaematology, microbiology, stem cell biology, components development, histocompatibility and immunogenetics and in platelet and granulocyte immunology. We also co-ordinate training of hospital staff in Transfusion Medicine, providing courses for trainee haematologists.

Training is multidisciplinary, in that scientific, technical and clinical aspects are taught together and integrated where appropriate. Courses are delivered by STT staff, senior scientists and clinicians from the NBS.
