Clinical Audit and the NBS

The aim of Clinical Audit in the NBS is to measure the gap between ideal practice (determined from standards or guidelines) and actual practice. the NBS does not aim to use clinical audit to apportion blame or seek out individual bad practice, it aims to create a learning culture within which healthcare professionals can take responsibility for their own performance. Done correctly, audit can bring about change and improve practices and clinical effectiveness.

The Clinical Audit and Effectiveness Steering Group supports and facilitates the monitoring of clinically effective practice within the NBS.

Collaborative Audit with Hospitals

Part of the role of the NBS Clinical Audit and Effectiveness Department is to facilitate transfusion related audits within hospitals through the Regional Transfusion Committees. Marc Lyon is the Senior Clinical Audit Facilitator with responsibility for co-ordinating and facilitating these audits. To request audit support please complete the request form on your RTC  webpage.The completed request can be sent to Marc Lyon marc.lyon@nhsbt.nhs.uk or Barbara Stearn barbara.stearn@nhsbt.nhs.uk.
In all situations where the NBS Clinical Audit and Effectiveness Department provides support for hospital based transfusion audit, it will endeavour to collaborate with the clinical audit departments within each hospital taking part.
