An audit of emergency deliveries performed by the NBS has informed an improved process for documenting emergency requests. Click here for a copy of the audit.

The new process by which the NBS is managing Emergency “Blue Light’ deliveries is described in an NBS Management Process Description (MPD). Please click here for a PDF version of this MPD.

The process consists of
  • The Hospital Blood Transfusion Laboratories completing the relevant sections of the Emergency Component Request form.

Please click here for a PDF version of the form FRM/PTI/IS/021
Please click here for guidance notes on using this form

  • Then fax this to the local Centre
  • Lastly phone to confirm receipt. This phone call is the start time for the beginning of the delivery and during this conversation Hospitals can confirm any details including the target delivery time.

In extraordinary circumstances the NBS will issue products without a fax, but hospitals must recognise that mistakes are possible where written confirmation of an order is not received. Similarly without the confirmatatory phone call there is a risk that these requests are not processed immediately.
