Filton Development - Stem Cell Immunotherapy (SCI)

The Stem Cell and Immunotherapy department in Bristol is a JACIE accredited, licensed tissue establishment that provides comprehensive services supporting autologous and allogeneic haematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplantation at six transplant centres in Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham and Taunton.

Services include (1) assisting with bone marrow and cord blood collection at local hospitals, (2) evaluation of donations using specialized flow cytometry assays to determine viable white blood cell and stem cell doses, (3) processing of bone marrow to reduce volume and to remove incompatible red blood cells, (4) processing of donations using immunomagnetic beads to purify stem cells or deplete donor T cells, (5) preparation of donor lymphocyte infusions, (6) cryopreservation and long-term storage of cells, and (7) delivery and infusion of HPC and other cellular preparations at the local transplant centres.

The department moved in July 2008 to purpose built facilities that include a complex of laboratories, clean rooms, and cryostorage areas designed to support the established transplant programmes in the region and approved translational research projects.
