Filton Development - Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI)
The Red Cell Immunohaematology department in Bristol provides a 24 hour reference service for hospitals. Work involves dealing with investigation of red cell antibodies and providing advice on or provision of suitable blood for transfusion. Follow up investigations are performed on antenatal patients to identify pregnancies at risk from haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn.
Work currently performed by Southampton RCI will be consolidated at Bristol by the end of February 2008. This means that Bristol will provide a service for approximately 60 hospitals in the South, West and South West. New extended routine working hours have just been introduced, including Saturday morning working. The laboratory is moving to purpose built facilities at Filton in early November 2008 and will be operational there from later in November.
