Introduction to the Filton development

The development of a new, state-of-the-art blood centre in Filton, Bristol is a key feature of NHS Blood & Transplant’s strategy to modernise the service and meet future demand. As part of this strategy blood processing and testing from across Birmingham and the South West are being consolidated into the new blood centre.

The building of the new £60 million centre was completed in June 2008 and will become fully operational by June 2009. The Filton blood centre is one of the most tangible signs of change within the National Blood Service and an example of the way in which the Service is evolving.

Bristol Hospital Services (Issue) and Sample Reception began operating from NHSBT Filton from Sunday 16th November 2008. All other departments that require Sample Reception became fully operational at NHSBT Filton from this date too.

All patient samples that need to be tested in Bristol must be sent to Filton either directly or via your local centre; any samples sent to Southmead in error will inevitably be delayed and are at risk of not being tested in a timely manner.
