Irradiator indicator labels

The new Radtag labels will start being used on 1 September 2018 and will be seen in hospitals shortly afterwards

Hospitals could have the old RadSure and new labels in their stocks for a short amount of time; both will be valid and products should be used in line with the current process and expiry dates.

To avoid wastage some NHSBT sites may continue to use RadSure labels for a short time after 1 September; information about this will be given to the relevant hospitals nearer the time.

How to identify when components have been irradiated

Our system has been amended so we can maintain an audit trail of the component by scanning the irradiation label rather than hand writing a signature and date on the label, as previously.

Red Cells in additive solution, LD, for neonates and infants, irradiated, (commonly known as LVTs) will have a separate label containing the date and time of irradiation.

All other irradiated neonatal components have the shelf life indicated on the grouping label.

We welcome your feedback

We will send a survey to Hospitals in December. Please do participate and take the opportunity to send us your feedback. It will be used to help inform our next tender exercise.

Why we changed the labels

Periodically we need to tender for new irradiator indicator labels. The last tender exercise resulted in two companies, BioTest, supplying RadSure, and Best Theratronics supplying RadTag. Both passed the NHSBT validation protocol however the contract was awarded to Best Theratronics, based on a cost analysis.

Who we consulted

Alongside the recommendations from the Human Factors report, stakeholders from NHSBT and the wider NHS worked together to ensure the label design was acceptable for all touch points in the usage chain.

SHOT reportable incidents

All SHOT incidents relating to the labels should be reported in line with the process.
