Integrated Transfusion Services

Integrated Transfusion Services (ITS) is the term NHS Blood and Transplant is using to describe a range of exciting new initiatives that have the potential to transform the way NHS Blood and Transplant delivers services and works with hospitals.

Building and expanding on tried and tested models already operating in the UK and other countries, ITS has the potential to enable more effective and efficient management of blood and component stocks throughout the entire donor to patient supply chain, as well as helping to facilitate wider Pathology Modernisation.

As well as reducing costs and contributing to improving patient safety, potential advantages include reduced blood wastage, better demand and collection planning, fresher blood by reducing inventory and reduced turnaround times for access to blood and component products.

As the main service provider of blood components to hospital transfusion laboratories in England and North Wales, NHS Blood and Transplant is well placed to help support these changes and adapt how we provide both blood components and diagnostic services in this new environment.

We are currently analysing the potential of different models for working with hospitals and quantifying the costs and benefits to the NHS. To complete this analysis we will be working with hospital Trusts and other stakeholders over the coming months and will update those not directly involved with the analysis stage as the programme develops.

Depending upon the outcome of the analysis, the next stage will be to work with a small number of hospital Trusts and pathology networks to pilot new ways of working.
